This 4-hour "Wilderness First Aid" course, taught by Heart & Soul CPR, focuses on emergency response in wilderness settings. Students will learn to prepare for emergencies, assess scenes and patients, and manage sudden injuries, illnesses, and environmental emergencies. Hands-on scenario skills include treating shock and hypothermia, controlling bleeding with improvised tourniquets, and positioning and caring for spinal injuries. The course also covers building a fire reflector from natural materials for cold Alaskan conditions and creating a natural water filtration system for safe drinking water. Students will also learn to create an emergency signal device. Each student will receive a Survival First Aid Kit. Full attendance and participation in lectures, skills, and group scenarios are required.
